I am Ben Broughton, the proud owner and director of Broughton Ryan Ltd, nestled in the heart of Central Otago. Here, amidst the breathtaking landscapes, my fiancée and I, along with our young daughter (who’s just three months old as I pen this), have recently completed the construction of our own home on a picturesque lifestyle block.

My journey into the world of construction began in my childhood in Havelock North, a small town where I traded teddy bears for a little plastic hammer. Growing up surrounded by tradies, including my grandfather who played a significant role in building the Hawkes Bay Hospital, I was immersed in a world of tools, timber, and creativity. Their influence sparked a lifelong passion for building and craftsmanship.

Guided by the unwavering support of my loving and hardworking parents, I developed a strong work ethic and determination to succeed. Sports, particularly rugby, were a big part of my life until I ventured into entrepreneurship, now replaced by cherished moments with family and rounds of golf.

My academic journey led me to Havelock North High School, where I earned the honour of becoming a prefect and received the prestigious “King” award for leadership excellence. Throughout my schooling, I was fortunate to have mentors like Craig McDougall, whose lessons in resilience continue to inspire me today.

After high school, I embarked on my building career, inspired by the success of a close friend in the industry, Ryland Jones. Moving to the stunning landscapes of Wānaka, I seized the opportunity to apprentice with a local builder, fueling my passion for the craft and nurturing the dream of starting my own business. Thus, Broughton Ryan Ltd was born.
